What is Medicaid?
The Medicaid Program provides medical benefits to groups of
low-income people, some of whom may have no medical insurance or
inadequate medical insurance. Although the federal
government establishes general guidelines for the program,
each state administers its own program by establishing
eligibility standards; determining the type, amount, duration, and scope of services;
and setting the rate of payment for services.
Whether or not a person is eligible for
Medicaid will depend on the state where he or she lives.
Medicaid does
not pay money to you; it instead sends payments directly to
your health care providers. You may be asked to pay a
small part of the cost (co-payment) for some medical
services.
