GrassCycling
Mowing
As with all lawn care, using proper GrassCycling
techniques will ensure a beautiful outcome. The first thing to think about
is mowing. Many Coloradoans think that a short-cropped lawn is the way to
go. However, cutting your grass too short reduces the grass’s tolerance
to heat and its natural drought resistance. Short lawns are also more
prone to weeds, insects, and diseases. So before you begin, make sure you
set your lawn mower blade at the proper mowing height. The best height for
your lawn depends on your grass type but is generally between 2-2 ½
inches. Here are some common Colorado grass types:
Type of Grass and Mower Setting
-
Buffalo - 2 inches
-
Fescue - 2 ½ inches
-
Blue Grass - 2 ½ inches
Another important rule to remember is the "1/3
rule." This means never remove more than one third of the grass’s
height. This reduces the stress on the grass blades as well as keeping the
clippings short enough so that they filter to the soil and will not cover
your lawn’s surface. This may mean mowing every five days instead of
every seven. Even so, research shows that GrassCycling still takes less
time than weekly raking and bagging.
When GrassCycling make sure that the lawn is dry
before mowing. Wet grass causes clumps and clogs lawn mowers. If you have
to rake-and-bag due to extended periods of rain, think about composting
your clippings instead of trashing them.
