Citizens' Law Enforcement Academy

Application Form

What is the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy?

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy is a 19 week course providing an overview of various law enforcement topics. The program explains the different aspects of police work using classroom discussions and hands-on demonstrations.

The Sheriff’s Office has found that education has been an effective tool in gaining the understanding and support from our community. The Citizens’ Academy offers community members insight into how Sheriff’s Deputies perform their duties and how the Sheriff’s Office serves the community.

Mission of the Academy

The mission of the Citizens’ Academy is to educate the citizens of Boulder County with the operation of the Sheriff’s Office while obtaining valuable feedback from those citizens. The Academy will create a nucleus of well-informed citizens who possess greater insight into police practices and services. Graduates of the Academy can share their knowledge and experiences with the community as the opportunity arises. Everyone benefits from enhancing citizen understanding of the role and function of their local law enforcement.

Course Description

The Citizens’ Academy is not intended to serve as accredited law enforcement courses but merely to provide insight to the internal workings of the Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement in general.

Instruction consists of one 3 1/2-hour class held each week for a duration of nineteen weeks, including two Saturdays. There will be a final graduation ceremony at the end of the Academy.

This instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of law enforcement each week. Certified deputies with particular expertise will conduct each topic. Classes are limited to 25 citizen attendees.
