We try to provide many different types of information\u00a0through various publications and online sites. Our goal is to\u00a0provide useful information in a format that residents can easily\u00a0access.<\/p>\n<p>During the past decade, communications technology has\u00a0changed dramatically. The department has experimented with\u00a0some of these new tools to reach out to residents (for example,\u00a0Facebook and Twitter), but we weren\u2019t sure how that was working.\u00a0What we really wanted was to have relevant and consistent\u00a0information throughout the open space program that park\u00a0visitors recognize and appreciate, and rules and regulations posted\u00a0clearly to help to increase compliance.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to get help from an outside marketing firm to ask\u00a0Boulder County residents what they thought. Are we giving them\u00a0information in a format they can use and in a location that\u2019s easy\u00a0to find?<\/p>\n<h2>Communications Study Goal<\/h2>\n<p>To enhance the general public\u2019s knowledge, understanding,\u00a0and appreciation of open space properties and the rules and\u00a0regulations through better communication and consistency of\u00a0communications tools.<\/p>\n<h2>Objectives<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Evaluate public communication tools for\u00a0providing relevant, desired, and necessary\u00a0information<\/li>\n<li>Identify specific terminology for area\u00a0closures to increase understanding,\u00a0appreciation, and compliance<\/li>\n<li>Develop consistent standards for branding\u00a0and messaging across all communication\u00a0tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Methodology<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Five focus groups<\/li>\n<li>436 surveys at five popular properties<\/li>\n<li>Professional review of communications\u00a0materials<\/li>\n<li>Literature review of current best practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key Findings: What Did People Tell Us?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Park users primarily go to the website and trail\u00a0signs for information about most topics<\/li>\n<li>People are generally very satisfied with\u00a0communications from Parks &amp; Open Space<\/li>\n<li>To a large extent, the experience at the\u00a0property matches the information provided\u00a0about the park or trail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Top Information People Want to See<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Trail map<\/li>\n<li>Plants, wildlife, and sights to see at the\u00a0property<\/li>\n<li>Trail length and difficulty level<\/li>\n<li>Allowed property and trail uses<\/li>\n<li>Information they want to see on closure signs\u00a0is the reason the area is closed and a map of\u00a0the closed area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>So We Listened!<\/h3>\n<p>You may have noticed this issue of Images has a\u00a0new look, and the brochures and kiosks have also\u00a0received a facelift! Here are some of the changes:<\/p>\n<h3>Images Magazine<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Updated contemporary design<\/li>\n<li>More photos and graphics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Maps<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Updated four-color design<\/li>\n<li>Photos of must-see destinations<\/li>\n<li>Clear distinction of open recreation areas\u00a0and closed areas with the closure type\/reason\u00a0clearly stated<\/li>\n<li>New trail elevation graphs showing trail\u00a0difficulty<\/li>\n<li>Trails more prominent in vivid white<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Property Brochures<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>New colorful design<\/li>\n<li>New map is bigger<\/li>\n<li>Higher quality photos<\/li>\n<li>Highlights: common plants &amp; wildlife, and\u00a0views or structures that shouldn\u2019t be missed<\/li>\n<li>Icons for the rules and regulations for at-a-glance\u00a0reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Park Kiosks<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bigger map is prominently featured<\/li>\n<li>Icons for the rules and regulations for at-a-glance\u00a0reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parks and Open Space has been sharing information with\u00a0Boulder County residents since the department was formed in\u00a01975.
